MAKE YOUR SHORTLIST MORE USEFUL
Choose space you can actually use
Start with the objects you carry on an ordinary day. Exterior shape and advertised capacity are useful, but neither fully explains how those objects fit inside.
Compare dimensions with your real belongings
Record the size of your laptop with its case, bottle or other rigid object. Compare those dimensions with the relevant compartment and its opening, not only the bag’s outside measurements. A laptop screen-size label does not specify the sleeve’s usable width and depth. Two bags with similar overall capacity may divide their space very differently.
Look inside before counting pockets
Ask for an open view showing the main compartment, closures and internal divisions. Think about the item you need to reach most often and whether its pocket remains accessible when the bag is full. Several small pockets are not always more useful than one clear space. A bottle pocket also needs to suit the bottle you actually plan to carry.
Consider the carrying position
For a shoulder or crossbody bag, check strap length and adjustment, especially if you will wear it over a jacket. For a backpack, look at its dimensions and strap arrangement rather than assuming a capacity figure establishes fit. Photos cannot verify comfort under load, waterproofing or device protection. Keep any essential unanswered feature visible in your comparison.
Before you keep it on your list
- Will the largest object pass through the opening and fit its compartment?
- Are interior views and usable dimensions available?
- Is the strap adjustable as needed, and are pictured straps or pouches included?
